In memory of Professor Shiing-Shen CHERN

 

Prof. Shiing-Shen Chern (陈省身) was born on 28th October 1911 in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, and passed away on 3rd December 2004 in Tianjin.

 

Prof. Chern became an advisor for our Foundation in 1994, and had been entrusted with the post of Executive Committee member since 1997. He graduated from Nankai University in 1930, his master’s degree from Tsinghua University in 1934, and his Ph.D from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 1936. Research and mathematics education was his life devotion. He taught in the department of Mathematics at Tsinghua University, which later became the National Southwestern Associated University, from 1937 to 1943. CHERN was professor of mathematics at the University of Chicagofrom 1949 to 1960, and the University of California, Berkeleyfrom 1960 to 1979. He was the honorary director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley from 1979 to 2004.

 

Prof. CHERN had gained international recognition for his work. He was awarded the National Medal of Science, USA, and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics, Israel. He had received many honors and recognitions, and the representative honorary doctorate degrees and science academy memberships received by him are as follows:
