Professor SUN Jiadong



Professor SUN Jiadong (孙家栋)was born in 1929, in Fuxian (now Wafangdian City), Liaoning. He is a Chinese scientist specializing in carrier rocket and satellite technology, and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, International Academy of Astronautics, the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences.



Sun graduated from the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy, former USSR in 1958 after receiving the Stalin Gold Medal (highest honors). Returning to China the same year, he served in the Fifth Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense, conducting missile research. In 1967, he was appointed by Qian Xuesen to restructure the staff for satellite research. During the Cultural Revolution, Sun was appointed as the chief scientist of the Chinese satellite project. He is currently senior technical adviser of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. Since 2003, he has been the chief designer for the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP). He was also the chief designer of a second generation of special application satellites, such as communication, meteorological, and earth resource detecting satellites, as well as the Beidou-2 navigation system.



Professor Sun has made tremendous contributions to the development of China’s aerospace industry. He received the First-Class Merit Citation by the Ministry Of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1984; two National Science and Technology Progress Award Grand Prizes in 1985 (experimental communications satellite and microwave measurement and control system, remote-sensing satellite and the Dongfanghong satellites); special government allowance from the State Council since 1991; the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Award in 1996; "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Achievement Medal in 1999; title of "Prominent contributor to the first lunar exploration project” in 2007, and the National Science and Technology Award in 2009. In 2012, an asteroid was named after him in honor of his achievements and service to the nation.
