Overview

From 1994 to 2018, through conscientious evaluations by our advisory committee, 336 Qiu Shi awards had been conferred to Chinese scientists in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, medicine, and so on. Of them, we have one Qiu Shi Lifetime Achievement Award laureate (ZHOU Guangzhao), 29 Outstanding Scientist Award laureates (DENG Jiaxian, WU Wenjun, WANG Zhenyi, SHI Yigong, etc.), 180 Outstanding Young Scholar Award laureates (BAI Chunli, CHEN Zhu, Zhang Jie, etc.), and 126 Outstanding Scientific Research Team Award laureates, whose research encompass 15 wide-ranging subjects, such as artemisinin, synthetic bovine insulin, Tarim Basin desertification control, iron-based superconductor, and so on. In addition, the Foundation has also launched the Qiu Shi Graduate Student Scholarship and the Cha Chi Ming & Liu Bie Ju Undergraduate Student Scholarship in over 20 universities, including the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), to award outstanding Ph.D. students and provide financial assistance to exceptional undergraduate students in need. The Foundation has so far granted over 7300 scholarships. The Foundation is also dedicated to promote exchange between Chinese scientists and the leading international research institutes, by sponsoring Chinese visiting scholars to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and funding educational programs such as the Special Pilot Computer Science Class at Tsinghua University.

The Qiu Shi Foundation has always stood by its original mission to build national strength through scientific and technological development. The CAST-Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award was established at the proposal of then chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Prof. Zhou Guangzhao, and Qiu Shi Foundation founder Dr. CHA Chi Ming. This annual award, given from 1998 to 2018, comprised of the Science and Technology Commercialization Award, and the Applied Engineering Award. The Science and Technology Commercialization Award recognized young researchers from both industry and academia who contributed to the commercialization of scientific and technological inventions. It was conferred upon 10 recipients annually. The Engineering Award was for young researchers who made major breakthroughs in the front lines of national defense and technological innovations, such as aerospace engineering, information technology, biotechnology and pharmaceutics, and so on. 15 award recipients were elected annually.

In the ensuing 24 years since its inauguration, the Foundation has been wholly committed to promote the advancement of science and technology in China. Ever adaptive to the changing landscape of science and society, it has always been accommodative in its strategic planning, and the purpose and design of its individual Awards. Our award laureates range from the pioneering scholars who had established the foundations of China’s basic research, young researchers who carried on the torch in their native land instead of leaving for better circumstances abroad, and environmental scientists who persevered for the prevention and control of desertification. In the recent years, Qiu Shi has also turned its attention towards supporting innovative talents in basic research and promoting academic exchange between the Chinese and international scientific community. Through its many endeavors, Qiu Shi has unwaveringly stood by its original value: “Assistance instead of Accolade”.
